Houseman

I wish I could take credit for picking Houseman, but that goes to our friends. This cozy spot focuses on freshness and leans into seasonal produce when building their menu. There are plenty of shareable items so get to sharing – you won’t want to miss that “pleasantly warm” section.

We started with the pickles, cheese, and salami and I loved that it was a true mix of pickled veggies. I also kinda love that the cheese and salami was left in large hunks. There’s something nice about the rustic feel – like we’re all friends here, no need to be too formal. We also got the bread with miso kombu butter and let me tell ya – do NOT skip this. Two other things we shared that were absolutely incredible: grilled cabbage with tahini and chili crisp and roasted mushrooms with fried sunchokes and cured egg. Honestly, I didn’t want to share. We also got the fried ugliest aka crispy potatoes. They were good but much better when I dipped them in the aioli from someone’s entree and were generally the least memorable item of the evening.

For entrees, I got the skate wing with Szechwan peppercorn meunière and my fellow diners got the burger, the sausage with black eyed peas and collards, and the steak frites. Everyone fully enjoyed their meal and all plates were cleaned. The entrees were far simpler in composition than the appetizers, but that just highlighted the quality of the ingredients.

It’s not an inexpensive meal, but it’s a good one that reminded me quality does not have to be fussy.
